Why it is wrong to Slam Serena Williams Body Image #Wimbeldon

Serena-Williams-Top-Spin-Commercial-2K-Sports-4It has become apparent though several media outlets and corresponders, that Serena Williams apparently is built like a “Man.”Its hard to fathom that ideology, particularly when you have one of the greatest athletes of all time with one of the best bodies of all time. Any athlete can contest to how rigorous their workout regimen and diet must be to adhere to the daily practices including warm-ups etc. The 33-year old athlete is no exception to this rule and shouldn’t be treated as such.

According to The Grio Online, The New York Times had this to say on Twitter about Serena Williams Body after she won

“Serena Williams has a muscular frame. Her rivals choose not to emulate her physique”

The undertone behind the comments made by the publication and other individuals on Twitter seem to stem from a racially charged motive versus a physique based connotation, suggesting that other athletes should re-frame from achieving Serena’s body. Lets take several things into consideration with the comments made. Serena Williams just won her fourth consecutive Grand Slam title and 21st of her career on Saturday July 11th by beating Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain, 6-4, 6-4, at Wimbledon. It is her sixth Wimbledon championship ever all and sparkled the controversy. She is one of the highest paid athletes of all time including her endorsement with Nike, making her a powerful brand on her own accord. Despite the comments made regarding her body image, many of her closest friend came to her rescue on Twitter, Including J.K. Rowling when she replied back with this tweet.

You do the math people, there is nothing wrong with her body. Objectifying her is solely based on the fact that she is a woman and a top athlete. It is also based on the fact that she is an athlete of color (at-least what some people are saying). Do you agree?
